While I currently call the School of Nursing my IUPUI home, the School of Medicine Development Office under the direction of Dr. David Smith was my doorway into the IUPUI campus.
In celebration of Watson and Crick's incredible contributions to the discovery of DNA, Dr. Smith approached Dale Chihuly, world-renowned glass blowing artist, to ask if he would construct something spectacular on the IUPUI campus. The result is the beautiful double helix rising up in the Van Nuys Medical Science building.
I'll never forget all of those beautiful, richly colored glass bulbs spread out on tarps all over the atrium floor as Chihuly's crew worked to construct the massive piece. We got to help with the installation, polishing and organizing the glass by color and size. I was asked to create the instructional panels that are displayed on the wall to describe the work and the history behind it. I am so proud to have played a small part in such an amazing project.
