Fifty years ago, IUPUI opened its doors for the very first time for students who wanted to achieve new milestones and better serve their communities. Fifty years later, Fulbright Commissions around the world promote programs offered by IUPUI. Such amazing progress!
The very first time I heard about IUPUI was during my Fulbright application process. Karoly Jokay, the Executive Director of the Hungarian-American Fulbright Commission told me that if I would like to deepen my understanding of and gain experience in philanthropy and fundraising, I should consider the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at IUPUI, the world’s first school dedicated solely to the study and research of philanthropy. I did so and, after successfully applying for the school’s graduate program, I became one of the nearly 2,200 international students at IUPUI who contribute to the campus’ cultural diversity today.
IUPUI empowered me to improve myself, reach my goals and be a responsible world citizen.

The orientation week organized by the Office of International Affairs helped me to get settled in Indianapolis; my international mentor — the best ever — became my friend and introduced me to U.S. college life; and the school provided the most welcoming environment I have ever experienced as an international student. I soon became a Jaguar and a Hoosier!
Since then, IUPUI — including my professors, classmates and colleagues — has continuously made me feel at home and has inspired me to take new opportunities. One such opportunity was my graduate assistantship at the school’s research department. I have learned so much by working with leading researchers in my field and being part of an international research project, the 2018 Global Philanthropy Environment Index. I have made new friendships, learned more about philanthropic environments around the world, but most importantly, I have been able to give back to my communities through the contribution to such research. IUPUI empowered me to improve myself, reach my goals and be a responsible world citizen. It’s been amazing to be a part of IUPUI’s own progress!
P.S. It is an astonishing experience when you can swim at IU Natatorium using the same competition pool where the world’s best swimmers compete against each other. Singing the national anthem for the athletes representing Hungary has truly inspired me to push my limits to represent and serve my home and host communities every day. For me, this is the spirit of IUPUI.
