I remember registering for classes in the 1970s in the Lecture Hall. All departments and classes would be set up at tables with boxes for each class. The boxes contained IBM cards, one card per student in the class. Once all the cards were gone from the box, the class was full.
This was class registration, back in the old days. We would walk around from table to table and gather all the cards for the classes we wanted for that semester. We would then take the cards to the first day of class where the instructor would collect them. It was a simple system, but then, classes were only $19 per credit hour at the time.
Ah, the good old days.
